Friday, August 13th- Quilt Exhibit
Opening
Temple Har Shalom (THS) is proud to announce the opening of a unique display showcasing the art of quilting by Israeli artists.

Please join us immediately following Shabbat Services on Friday, August 13, which begin at 6:30 p.m., for a special Oneg, catered by Cuisine Unlimited, and the official opening of the Israeli Quilt Exhibit. Brought to us from Jerusalem, all 33 quilts will be on display for your personal viewing. The quilts are uniquely beautiful and depict themes of the holy land, the Old Testament, the exploration of nature, the human condition and other thought provoking concepts.  Many thanks to Bill Handler for making this extraordinary exhibit possible.

The exhibit was originally shown at BYU’s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies last year. THS members who saw the exhibit in Jerusalem were so impressed with the beauty of the quilts and the quality of the show that they immediately began working with the Jerusalem Center’s curator, Mrs. Neomi Weinstein, to bring the quilts to display here in Park city. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring such a beautiful and unique exhibit to the Temple and to Park City,” said Rabbi Joshua Aaronson of THS. “I would also like to thank the staff at BYU’s Jerusalem Center for their support and cooperation in helping us bring this one-of-a-kind experience back to Utah.”

The ten artists whose work will be on display have many years of collective quilting experience and have had their individual works shown all over the world in countries including the Netherlands, Germany, Israel, the United States, France, Switzerland, Hungary, and the United Kingdom. The exhibit incorporates a variety of styles including typical blanket patchworks to more intricate works, and even elegant hand-made dress garments. Dr. Jim Kearl, Assistant to the University President for BYU’s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies said, “Over the past several years, the Jerusalem Center has exhibited works by both Israeli and Palestinian artists and the quilt exhibit was among the most popular. The Jerusalem Center’s objectives include providing a venue for artists who have few opportunities for exposure, and promoting good will between different communities. We are, therefore, pleased that the quilt exhibit caught the eye of some members of Temple Har Shalom and that a connection could be made between the BYU Center in Jerusalem, and a Jewish congregation in Park City.”

The exhibit will be free and open to the public from August 14th through December 10th, 2010 at Temple Har Shalom in Park City.
